What are my geofencing options today on Special.tv?
Today, geofencing is a channel-wide feature, meaning you have the option and ability to restrict access to your channel from worldwide to US-only. As a beta version of a geofencing feature, the scope is limited to US-only today, but we are planning to expand this feature to give creators more control over the territories and properties this functionality can be applied to.
How do I turn on Geofencing for my channel?
Geofencing can be turned on in the Customization tab in the creator studio, via a checkbox located at the bottom of the Branding modal.
Can I restrict certain properties in certain areas?
The beta version of the geofencing feature is channel-wide, and cannot be configured for individual properties (yet!)-- and does not include other territories besides US-only, or worldwide.
What does beta mean?
We’re currently labeling geofencing beta due to its limited scope (US only). With future releases we are planning to expand this feature to give creators more control over the territories and properties this functionality can be applied to. If you need, or would like to use geofencing for your channel but this beta version is not sufficient, we’d love to better understand how you’d like to use the feature and to understand which expansions to the feature would be most beneficial.
What if I turn on geofencing for my channel but I have subscribers in those restricted areas?
If a user in a restricted area is subscribed to your channel before you've enabled geofencing, they will remain a subscriber and have access to your content--until they unsubscribe. Once they have unsubscribed, and if they're in a restricted area, they won't be able to access your channel.
How does this affect rentals?
As a channel-wide feature, this affects your rental properties as well. If you've turned on geofencing, only renters in the US will be able to access your channel and rent your content.
If a user has an active rental when you enable geofencing, they will be able to access the content through their paid period of rental, but be restricted in accessing your channel afterward.
